  • Thomas Paine, the remarkable political writer and radical thinker of the 18th century, came to Sandwich in 1759 and opened a shop in New Street.
  • Celery was first grown in Sandwich.
  • The sandwich was invented by John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich in 1762.
