Hythe is situated on the “Garden Coast” of Kent. The town became a Borough in 1026 when King Canute signed the documents conveying the lands of Hith to the Church at Canterbury. Hythe means Haven; it gradually lost its harbour during the course of the latter Middle Ages. The Charter of 1278 is still kept in the Town’s Archives.
Did you know? Hythe is dominated by St Leonards Church, famous for its crypt where human remains from the early settlement are exhibited. The Town Council still has its medieval moot horn which is housed in the Town Hall. The Town plays host to the Hythe Festival and the Hythe Venetian Fete in alternate years: the latter is centred on the famous Ancient Monument of the Royal Military Canal which runs through the Town. The Canal celebrates its two hundredth anniversary in April 2009.
