The only town in the UK whose leopard coat of arms is likened to the Royal Arms of England, a sign of its privileged past. The Mayoralty dates back to 1292 with Mayors listed in the Guildhalll, which was built in 1574. The Guildhall is only yards away from the tidal creek which was once busy with Thames barges, exporting goods to London. The Fleur de Lis Heritage Centre displays a thousand years of the town’s history & heritage with changing exhibitions.
Did you know? Traces of a ruined abbey, the resting place of King Stephen, Queen Matilda and the Maison Dieu founded by Henry III attest to Faversham’s royal connections. The Chart Gunpowder Mills made powder for Nelson at Trafalgar & Wellington at Waterloo. The town is home to Shepherd Neame, the UK’s oldest brewery and Brogdale, the National Fruit Collection.
